Flying After Rhinoplasty: Can I fly after rhinoplasty?

Flying After rhinoplasty is one of the most important issues these days. Especially if you want rhinoplasty in Iran and come from foreign countries. “Is it dangerous to fly after rhinoplasty?” this is the most question people ask. They want to know when it is safe to fly after a nose job.

This article is a guide for people who have rhinoplasty in a city or country far from where they live. We don’t recommend flying for at least a week for patients travelling from distant cities or foreign countries. Unless there is a specific problem such as nosebleeds, you can fly within 48 hours to travel within the country.

Can I fly after rhinoplasty?

Flying by plane after rhinoplasty should be with the advice and permission of your surgeon. Therefore, if you are planning to travel by plane, consult with your surgeon to determine if the flight is suitable for you.

Sometimes flying by plane after rhinoplasty poses irreparable risks to patients. In general, recovery time after rhinoplasty takes about two weeks. After that, you are expected to be able to return to your normal daily life.

In fact, if you don’t have to travel by airplane or don’t want to take the risk of flying, you must wait about 14 days for flying. However, due to their recovery process, some patients can travel by aircraft after a week without any problems.

Flying After rhinoplasty – when is it safe?

People travel for different reasons, such as:

  • The lack of skilled surgeon
  • The high cost of cosmetic surgery services

In their city or country.

You should wait at least a week or two before flying. Therefore:

  • Complications are less likely
  • The surgeon had an adequate and appropriate visit after the nose job

Side effects mentioned above can include infection or bleeding. The adequate and appropriate visits are also to remove the splints and nasal stitches. For people travelling long distances, as well for people travelling from abroad, it is possible to travel using an airplane after one week.

The first week is critical. During this week, the tissues inside the nose are healing and the healing process happens quickly. One week is the shortest recovery time for a patient after rhinoplasty. A change in pressure due to a change in the altitude of the aircraft may lead to bleeding.

Problems with flying after rhinoplasty

Problems with flying at high altitudes that may occur in the first days after rhinoplasty include:

-Bleeding due to pressure changes (nosebleed)

Most bleeding occurs during the first few days after surgery. A small percentage of patients bleed for up to 3 weeks after the nose job. Heavy bleeding during flight can have dangerous consequences for you. Take Phenylephrine with you to prevent this from happening.

-Sinus congestion

Increase and decrease pressure in the airplane may lead to sinus congestion. Although it does not pose a serious risk, it can cause pain. Swelling in your nose may also increase during or after the flight. This could be due to a lack of air pressure. Usually, the swelling problem subsides after a few hours. Only in special cases, this swelling lasts up to 3 months.

Of course, in long journeys of several hours, whether by plane or other vehicles, there are other risks. These risks are about immobility and the possibility of blood clots in the legs. You should follow the recommendations to prevent the problems.

Anyway, if you cannot wait and you have to fly earlier than one week after rhinoplasty: you can follow “flying after rhinoplasty ‘tips”. However, you must accept the risks and dangers.
